Herman Story, Milk & Honey 2018
You don’t typically grace glossy-eyed bar patrons with the golden pipes, but you're four rum and Cokes deep and “Born to Run” is playing, so why the hell not? Mic in hand, you’re perched on leather barstools, vocals ringing with all the fullness of nutmeg over poached plums, roma tomatoes from freshly-potted soil, cigar smoke at dawn. A crowd forms to watch you high-step across the bar like you’re eighteen again, North High School’s former first-chair tenor. Maraschino cherries, olives, and lacy undergarments rain down as you nail an air sax solo that would make The Boss proud. No one cares if you nail the high notes, but you do anyway because you’re a rock god, and in a swell of confidence spread your arms and fall, just hoping they’ll catch you.
Blend: 68% Tempranillo, 15% Syrah, 11% Mourvèdre, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon
93 point Jeb Dunnuck
The 2018 Milk & Honey is a more Tempranillo-dominated cuvée yet includes 15% Syrah, 11% Mourvèdre, and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon. Aged 18 months in 82% new French oak, its deep purple color is followed by lots of darker berry and currant fruits as well as notes of scorched earth, ground pepper, and black licorice. Rich, full-bodied, and mouthfilling, it has some classic Tempranillo tannins, a chocolatey, powerful, opulent texture, and a great finish. Give bottles a year to integrate some tannins and enjoy through 2027.
